Original Documents Not Necessary for Work Permits in USA

The USCIS does not require you to submit original documents or certified copies when applying for a U.S. immigrant work permit.
Legible photocopies of such documents (including naturalization certificates and alien registration cards) are acceptable for initial filing and approval of petitions and applications. (Be sure to keep copies of all submitted materials and of your completed application for your own reference purposes. Store the original documents in a safe location.) Supporting documents may include Certificates of Naturalization, Forms 1-551, Permanent Resident Card, Forms 1-94, Arrival/Departure Documents and passports.

For complete information on EADS and the process, go to www.uscis.gov/graphics/howdoi/ead.htm.

Check Your Status

The USCIS website also provides information on checking the status of your application and the appeal process. If your application for an EAD is denied you will receive a letter of explanation. You cannot appeal a negative decision to a higher authority, but you can submit a motion to re-open your case or a motion to reconsider your case with the office that made the decision.

A motion to reopen must state the new facts you will present in a reopened proceeding and has to be accompanied by documentary evidence. The motion must establish that the decision was based on an incorrect application of law or USCIS policy and that the original information on file was in error or was incomplete.

If you require assistance during the application process you can contact the USCIS office nearest you for a list of community-based nonprofit organizations that may be able to provide assistance. (Many of these entities will have qualified translators if you are more comfortable discussing such matters in your native language. They will assist you with understanding the process and the required forms.)

Check the Web

You may find it quicker and easier, however, to check the web for answers to your questions. The USCIS has an excellent website that provides links to material that should answer your questions. Go to www.uscis.gov/graphics/howdoi/ead.hm and that will provide you with overview of relevant information on work permits in USA and links to specific questions and answers. Take the time to go through the material thoroughly and you will be on your way to acquiring a USA work permit.
